Does Astrology Predict the Future? Understanding Fate, Free Will and Your Birth Chart
Jul 23, 2026
There is something deeply human about wanting to know what's coming next.
We check weather forecasts before planning a weekend away.
Read restaurant reviews before booking a table.
Scroll through comments before buying something online.
We're constantly gathering little pieces of information that help us feel more prepared.
Perhaps that's why astrology can feel so compelling.
If a birth chart could tell us exactly what was going to happen, it might quiet some of the uncertainty that naturally comes with being human. It might reassure us that we're on the right path. Or warn us before we make the wrong decision.
I understand the appeal.
But I've never believed that's what a birth chart is for.
Because if astrology simply handed us a fixed future, what would be the point of self-awareness?
What would be the point of reflection?
Or growth?
To me, your birth chart has never felt like a script.
It feels much more like a conversation.
One that changes as you do.
Why this question matters
One of the first things many people ask after discovering their birth chart is,
"If this is written in my chart, does that mean it's destined to happen?"
It's an understandable question.
Some astrology is presented in a way that makes life sound inevitable.
A difficult Saturn placement becomes a lifetime of struggle.
A challenging Venus aspect means you'll never find love.
Mercury retrograde arrives and suddenly every delayed email feels cosmically ordained.
I've always found that way of approaching astrology rather disheartening.
Not because life doesn't bring challenges. It does.
But because it quietly suggests we are passengers in our own lives.
That doesn't sit comfortably with me.
Your birth chart isn't a prediction
I see a birth chart as a map of potential.
It describes the landscape you were born into.
Your natural strengths.
Your blind spots.
The habits that may come easily.
The lessons that might take a little longer to learn.
It doesn't tell you which road you'll choose.
Think about two people with exactly the same placement.
Perhaps they both have a strong Virgo influence.
One spends years believing she has to earn love through perfection.
The other gradually learns to use that same attention to detail to become an exceptional editor, designer, or researcher.
The astrology didn't change.
Her relationship with it did.
That's why I find psychological astrology so compelling.
It doesn't ask, "What will happen?"
It asks,
"How do you tend to respond?"
And once you notice your patterns, you have something incredibly valuable.
Choice.
Awareness creates possibility
Have you ever caught yourself reacting in exactly the same way you always do?
Perhaps someone criticises your work and, before you've even had time to think, you're questioning your entire ability.
Or someone cancels plans and you immediately wonder whether you've done something wrong.
Those moments rarely appear out of nowhere.
They're often familiar patterns we've repeated so many times that they begin to feel like facts.
Astrology can help us notice those patterns.
Not so we can blame them on our birth chart.
So we can interrupt them.
There is a freedom in recognising yourself before you repeat yourself.
Sometimes that's where the real value of astrology lives.
Fate and free will can exist together
I don't think astrology and free will are opposites.
In fact, I think they need each other.
You may have natural tendencies.
Certain environments might bring out different parts of your personality.
Some lessons may return until you've understood what they're asking of you.
None of that removes your agency.
It simply gives you more information.
Imagine setting off on a long walk.
A map might tell you where the hills are.
It doesn't decide whether you climb them.
It doesn't choose your pace.
It doesn't stop you taking a different route altogether.
It simply helps you understand the landscape.
Your birth chart works much the same way.
The danger of handing your power away
One of the reasons I feel so strongly about this is because I've seen people become frightened of their own charts.
They avoid reading about certain placements because they've heard they're "bad".
They begin expecting difficult experiences before life has even presented them.
Or they use astrology to explain why they can't change.
"I'm just like that."
"It's in my chart."
"It was always going to happen."
I understand where that thinking comes from.
But I don't believe it's what astrology is inviting us to do.
If your birth chart leaves you feeling powerless, I would question the interpretation rather than yourself.
Good astrology should leave you feeling more aware.
Not more afraid.
The future isn't fixed
None of us knows exactly what tomorrow will bring.
That's true whether we study astrology or not.
Life has a wonderful habit of surprising us.
The birth chart doesn't remove uncertainty.
It gives us a way of meeting uncertainty with greater understanding.
Perhaps that's why I've never been particularly interested in using astrology to predict the future.
I'm much more interested in how it helps us live the present.
Because every time we notice an old pattern before repeating it...
Every time we choose curiosity instead of criticism...
Every time we respond a little differently than we did before...
We're shaping our future in ways no prediction could ever fully describe.
A question to carry with you
The next time you find yourself wondering,
"Is this destined to happen?"
You might like to ask a different question instead.
How is this invitation asking me to grow?
You don't need an immediate answer.
Sometimes simply asking the question changes the conversation.
Final Thoughts
Perhaps the most beautiful thing about astrology isn't that it offers certainty.
It's that it offers perspective.
It reminds us that we're wonderfully complex.
That we all have patterns.
That we all have gifts.
That we all have places where life asks us to grow.
Your birth chart won't make your choices for you.
It won't live your life.
It won't write your story.
Only you can do that.
What it can do is hand you a remarkably honest mirror.
One that reflects not just who you've been, but who you have the potential to become.
And to me, that's far more interesting than predicting the future.
FAQ's
Does astrology predict the future?
Not in the way many people imagine. A birth chart describes patterns, strengths, challenges, and potential. It doesn't remove free will or dictate a fixed future.
What is the difference between fate and free will in astrology?
Many astrologers see fate as the circumstances or tendencies we're born with, whilst free will lies in how we respond to them. Your birth chart can increase awareness, but your choices remain your own.
Can my birth chart change?
No. Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. What changes is your relationship with it as you grow and gain self-awareness.
Should I be worried about difficult placements?
No placement is inherently "good" or "bad". Every planet, sign, and aspect has constructive and challenging expressions. Understanding them can help you work with your chart more consciously.
If you're ready to move beyond generic astrology and explore your birth chart as a practical tool for self-understanding, Living Abundantia was created for exactly that purpose.
